Through the Hageland and Dijleland

As part of the commemoration of the Great War, for the first time ever GR has mapped out three walking routes lasting several days which will lead the long-distance walker along the traces of the First World War.

The route ‘Through the Hageland and Dijleland’ doesn’t follow the chronological order of the war operations exactly. We start at Tienen and first of all pass the lines of Grimde and Sint-Margriete-Houtem (battles of 18/8/1914). Then we go back in time and walk along Orsmaal (10/8), Zoutleeuw and Kortenaken to Halen (Battle of the Silver Helmets, 12/8). Via Diest and Zichem we walk to Aarschot (German reprisals from 19/8 onwards). After that the route leads via Wezemaal to Rotselaar (battle of the Mill, 12/9) and further via Tildonk and Veltem-Beisem to Leuven (fire and massacre of 25/8)..

The route follows mainly existing and signposted GR-trails.

The second route, Along the Antwerp Forts Belt, starts at Dendermonde and leads along the forts Walem, Breendonk, Liezele, Bornem, ... and furthermore via Lier to Broechem.

The third route, The Great War in Flanders, leads through the Westhoek, from Nieuwpoort via Ypres and Mesen to Poperinge.
